What are some common felony drug charges?

Felony criminal charges are always serious and felony drug charges are no different. While there are different types of felony drug charges, felony drug charges include drug trafficking and drug distribution charges. While drug possession charges are serious, and can carry potentially serious penalties and consequences, the penalties for drug trafficking charges can be especially harsh.

Individuals accused of drug trafficking or drug distribution can face from between three to five years in prison, all the way to life in prison. Additionally, drug possession charges may lead to drug trafficking charges if authorities believe the accused individual had the intent to sell or distribute the drugs they are alleged to be in possession of. If the accused individual is found with large amounts of drugs or cash, for instance, they may also be facing a serious drug trafficking charge.

In general, drug trafficking charges refer to the selling, transportation and illegal import of unlawful controlled substances. Illegal drugs can include marijuana, cocaine, heroin and methamphetamines. In addition, prescription drugs, if they are being sold illegally, can also be included in a drug trafficking charge. Although drug trafficking charges are always serious, factors that can impact the potential punishment can include the type of drugs involved, the amount of drugs involved and where they were distributed.

It is important for individuals accused of drug trafficking charges to protect their rights and to be familiar with what those rights are through the criminal justice process and system. There are a variety of criminal defense strategies and options, which is why accused individuals should be aware of what they are and how they relate to the unique set of circumstances they are facing when criminally charged.
