Man faces DUI charge after fatal crash

The legal system in Maryland treats those who are arrested on drunk driving charges very seriously with harsh penalties if there is a conviction. This is especially true if there is an accident and a felony conviction. While there is a stigma with any mention of DWI when there is an accident and another person is injured or killed, those who are confronted with these charges need to be fully aware of how their lives can be negatively affected by it if they are convicted.

A fatal accident has resulted in a man being charged with driving under the influence. The man, age 20, and from Ireland, was driving a 2006 Land Rover HSE southbound when he drove into the northbound lanes and crashed head-on with a 2011 Hyundai Santa Fe. The 60-year-old woman who was driving the Santa Fe was taken to the hospital where she later passed away. The alleged drunk driver was also hospitalized and was listed in fair condition. He is facing multiple offenses for his role in this crash.

There are many different consequences for a conviction for drunk driving and they can depend on the circumstances. A driver can lose his or her driving privileges, face harsh fines and even jail time. There might be an ignition interlock placed on the driver’s vehicle. If there is an accident of sufficient severity, there might be a felony charge. What drivers who are involved in a crash with allegations that they were under the influence have to understand is that regardless of others being injured or killed in the accident, they still have to formulate a strong defense to avoid the most stringent penalties.

It is possible that law enforcement made an error when giving the Breathalyzer test or the medical staff made a mistake with the blood test. Malfunctioning equipment could turn an accident that was based on circumstances into a drunk driving case with its accompanying penalties. It is imperative that a person who is dealing with drunk driving charges lodges a defense from the time the arrest is made so a complete investigation from their perspective can be conducted. An attorney may be able to educate individuals facing drunk driving charges further, so that the appropriate action can be taken.
