Virginia man faces DUI charges in Maryland hit-and-run

A 33-year-old Virginia man is facing 13 charges after allegedly hitting a pedestrian with his minivan and then fleeing the scene. Charges against the man include reckless endangerment, driving under the influence and negligent auto homicide under influence.

The charges against the man stemmed from a July 5 incident that occurred around 3 a.m., when the man allegedly struck a woman with his vehicle as she made an attempt to cross the street. Police believe the man was traveling northbound in his vehicle when the accident occurred.

According to police, officers who responded to the hit-and-run near the 7300 block of Baltimore Avenue arrived to find the 21-year-old female, who was reportedly critically injured. She was later pronounced dead at the scene while police were still investigating.

Although the man did not remain at the scene of the accident, patrol officers from Prince George's County later spotted a minivan nearby that matched a description of the vehicle witnesses claimed to see leaving the scene. The man was subsequently arrested.

Police state that the man's alcohol blood content results showed that he was allegedly twice the legal limit at the time of the accident. He reportedly did not sustain any injuries.

An experienced Maryland criminal attorney may be able to assist defendants who are charged with serious crimes such as driving under the influence by working to ensure that defendants are treated fairly during the legal process. Defendants have rights and just because they were arrested does not necessarily mean they are guilty of what they have been charged with.
