Maryland man to spend 3 years in jail for child sex crimes

A 36-year-old Middletown man has been sentenced to two 18-month sentences in jail that are to run for a period of three years, after reportedly pleading guilty to sex crime offenses that involved a 14-year-old female minor. The charges against the man included two counts of obscene telephone misuse and sexual solicitation of a minor. He is also charged with failing to register as a sex offender since he allegedly failed to provide his social media account information to the registry, as required by law.

According to court documents, the charges against the man stemmed from an incident that occurred on August 19, 2013 when the mother of the 14-year-old girl notified the sheriff's office after discovering that the man was allegedly trying to have sexual contact with the minor. He was reportedly trying to communicate with her on Facebook and by way of phone calls and text messages. During a subsequent interview with the man, court documents state that he allegedly told investigators that he had made inquiries to the girl about having sexual acts with the girl's 8-year-old family member. He also reportedly told investigators that he had an interest in young adolescent girls.

In addition to the two 18 month sentences in jail, the man was also given a suspended sentence of 16 years of prison time. He will also have to complete five years of supervised probation along with mental health treatments. The judge also ordered that the man was to have no contact with anyone under the age of 18. Should he fail to abide by the terms of his probation, the man could face the additional 16 years of his suspended sentence.

An experienced Maryland criminal attorney may be able to assist defendants accused of sex offenses against children and help to build a defense that could reduce charges or jail time.
