A 21-year-old man from Berlin, Maryland, is facing multiple sex crime charges including six counts of distribution of child pornography and six counts of possession of child pornography. The man has also been charged with one count of obscene matter with the intent to distribute.
The charges stem from an investigation that began back in September 2013 when a trooper from the State Police Computer Crimes Unit downloaded a file from a peer-to-peer file-sharing network that reportedly contained images of young children involved in sex acts. The detective was then able to trace the images, along with other images of children that contained sex acts of a similar nature, back to the man, who was allegedly identified as one of the users of the network.
According to police, investigators were able to track the images to a computer located at a residence east of Route 113 in Berlin. Although the man lived with his mother, police say they were able to ascertain that the man was the only one who used the computer
The defendant was subsequently arrested on May 5 after an interview in which he allegedly admitted to viewing and downloading pornographic images of children on at least 10 separate occasions. He was released on May 12 on $50,000 bond. There is no court hearing scheduled for him at this time.
Sex offenses such as possession and distribution of child pornography can cause serious damage to a defendant's personal and professional life. An experienced Maryland criminal attorney can work with a defendant to provide a defense that may be able to help reduce or dismiss these types of charges.
