Two Maryland woman arrested and charged with the murder of two small children have allegedly told police that they were performing an exorcism.

Police were called to the residence of the two women after a neighbor noticed a knife on the ground next to the open door of a vehicle. When the police responded to the home at a townhouse in Germantown, Maryland, they discovered the bodies of two young children with multiple stab wounds.

The 30-year-old mother and 21-year-old female resident were charged with two counts of murder for the deaths of the woman’s 1-year-old and 2-year-old children. They were also charged with two counts of attempted murder against the woman’s other two 5-year-old and 8-year-old children.

The mother was arrested after allegedly trying to flee from a townhouse located near the vehicle. The two older children along with the 21-year-old female were taken to the hospital for undisclosed injuries. The two children remain hospitalized. The female was treated and released before her arrest.

According to ABC 15, the police had been called out the previous day after a report of an unattended child left in a car. Before the police could respond, however, the two women had allegedly come out of the townhouse, retrieved the child and went back inside. A report was then made to Child Protective Services by police to request a follow up.

An exorcism is typically performed as a ritual with the purpose of evicting spirits or demons from a body. Police have not stated what prompted the two women to allegedly perform an exorcism. The case is still under investigation.

Both women remain in custody and are being held without bond. Retaining a legal team will surely be in their best interest to guide them through these proceedings.
