Maryland bans synthetic marijuana products

Synthetic marijuana use continues to increase in Maryland and throughout the United States. Synthetic marijuana has become so popular that the National Institute on Drug Abuse said it is the second-most common illegal drug used by high school seniors.

Synthetic marijuana is known by many different names including bath salts, incense, Spice and many others. Synthetic marijuana is said to be more dangerous than using marijuana as it can cause several serious symptoms like seizures, heart problems, vomiting and even death.

To crack down on those using the dangerous illegal substance, Maryland recently passed a law banning synthetic marijuana products. The law made the compounds in synthetic marijuana illegal by adding them to their list of illegal Schedule I drugs. The state's law does not ban specific compounds. Instead, it outlaws a wide spectrum of drugs that mimic the same effects of marijuana.

The new law makes it illegal for anyone to possess, use, distribute or sell synthetic marijuana. Individuals charged with this type of drug crime could face very serious penalties and fines, including up to four years in prison for possession or use of the substance. Individuals convicted of distributing synthetic marijuana could face up to 20 years in prison.

Synthetic marijuana is still very popular in Maryland, and is sold under a variety of names. Some of the most common names synthetic marijuana goes by are listed in our article on synthetic marijuana. Individuals who purchase these products could be charged with serious drug crimes and face harsh penalties so always be aware of what products you are buying if you think it may now be illegal under the new law.
