Maryland Belk employee taken into custody after alleged theft

A Belk Department Store in Maryland called police after one of the store's employees allegedly stole from the retailer. Authorities consulted with Belk's Loss Prevention team and saw video of the 19-year-old man apparently committing a theft. The video reportedly showed the worker stuffing merchandise into his pants pockets before he went into the employee locker room to retrieve his backpack. Out of view of the camera for a few moments, the employee then reportedly returned his backpack in his locker.

Loss Prevention, in accordance with Belk policy, then opened the 19-year-old's locker and searched his backpack without his knowledge. The personnel allegedly found numerous bottles of Belk men's cologne. They then put the backpack back into the locker. When the employee was leaving for the day with the backpack containing the allegedly stolen items, Loss Prevention stopped him. The man admitted that he had stolen other items, including a surround sound system. He estimated the value of the items he said that he had stolen over the preceding month to be about $2,500.

A further search of the employee's backpack revealed a metal grinder containing what was suspected to be marijuana. The man was taken into custody on charges of theft scheme, less than $1,000; theft, less than $1,000; theft scheme, $1,000 to under $10,000; possession of under 10 grams of marijuana; and possession of drug paraphernalia.

In Maryland, shoplifting or any other theft charge can bring serious penalties. An attorney with a background in defending those accused of crimes against property or a theft crime may be able to help. An attorney might be able to work out a plea bargain with the court in exchange for more favorable charges and penalties.
