Maryland couple charged in relation to heroin possession

According to the Kent County Narcotics Task Force, two individuals from Chestertown, a 23-year old man and woman, were taken into custody after heroin was allegedly discovered on their property. A variety of law enforcement agencies were involved, including the Chestertown Police Department's Special Response Unit, the Kent County Sheriff's Office and the Maryland State Police. Law enforcement executed a a knock and announce warrant on Georgetown Road at approximately 5 a.m. on Sept. 18.

According to a news release, police searched the home and the area surrounding it and discovered 21.9 grams of what is believed to be heroin outside of the bedroom window of the home. The drugs were separated into 84 plastic bags and further divided into bundles. The release went on to state that, in addition to the drugs discovered on the property, evidence of the couple's involvement in distribution was also discovered. Further information about this evidence was not available at the time because the investigation was still ongoing.

Both the man and woman have been charged with a number of crimes, including possession of heroin with intent to distribute and possession of drug paraphernalia. Bail has been set at $50,000 for each, and they were taken to the Kent County Detention Center. Preliminary hearings have been set for Oct. 17 to determine if there is probable cause to go forward.

Drug charges can carry serious penalties for individuals who are convicted, but it is up to law enforcement to prove someone's guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. A lawyer could ensure that evidence was obtained lawfully in accordance with their client's Fourth Amendment rights. They could also attempt to negotiate a plea bargain in order to have the charges reduced or dismissed.
