Salisbury reports increase in shoplifting

Salisbury, Maryland has reported an increase in shoplifting crimes. From 2012 to 2013, the city reported a 20 percent increase in store theft, and authorities have received more than one shoplifting report per day. Fines and jail time may vary among individuals depending upon the value of the goods stolen and the number of repeat offenses.

Because of the surge in shoplifting in Salisbury, police are aiming to decrease the number of times that thefts occur to local businesses. Even though the larger retail stores carry the brunt of the theft, many smaller stores have reported robberies as well. In fact, in May of 2013, the police department began to send out reports on a weekly basis listing all the information regarding the most recent offenders. It is important to note that the number of reports may not equal the number of arrests, because more than one individual may be involved in a single shoplifting incident.

Stores are working with the police department in order to try to curb thefts in the area. It is unclear as to what protocols the stores have established with the local authorities; however, one can be certain that many of the stores will be utilizing heightened security methods in an attempt to curtail the level of thefts.

The increase in surveillance and the increased police awareness towards shoplifters might result in more arrests. Those facing shoplifting charges may need a strong legal defense. A criminal defense attorney may be able to help them by reviewing the case and deciding the method by which they should proceed. In some cases, depending upon the evidence and other factors, an attorney might be able to get his client's charges reduced or dismissed.
