Man accused of almost 50 traffic violations

On May 20, shortly before 11:30 p.m., police attempted to execute a traffic stop on a vehicle after they witnessed what was perceived as erratic driving. However, the driver did not stop. The 29-year-old Maryland man allegedly turned into a parking garage on 77th Street and drove through the structure at a high rate of speed. Upon exiting the garage, the man's vehicle struck a bush.

The man did not stop there. Police report that he continued driving at a high rate of speed, running through an unspecified number of stop signs. He lost control of the vehicle on Coastal Highway and almost collided with the median. The driver then turned onto 79th Street, where he struck a street sign after driving onto the sidewalk. The man then exited the car and attempted to flee the scene on foot. Shortly thereafter, police were able to apprehend and arrest him. The man is now charged with driving under the influence of alcohol. He was arraigned in the District Court and released the following day after posting a $25,000 bond. His blood alcohol level at the time of the incident was not released.

The driver was also issued almost 50 traffic citations for the events prior to his arrest, including negligent driving and reckless driving. He will be required to appear in court to defend approximately 12 of the alleged violations.

A person who is charged with drunk driving or other traffic offenses has a right to have the prosecution prove the charges beyond a reasonable doubt. In some cases, a criminal defense attorney may be able to help negotiate a favorable plea bargain on some charges in exchange for dismissing others. Multiple charges may give an accused person some room to negotiate.
