Man pleads guilty to stealing $80, sentenced to 78 years

A 21-year-old man's life has been permanently changed after he chose to plead guilty to a charge of burglary. When many people in Montgomery County think of crimes that deserve a sentence of 78 years in prison, they likely think of some of the most horrific and violent of crimes, not stealing $80. Sadly, this man will be spending a great deal of time in prison for only taking that much from an acquaintance.

Though a majority of his sentence has been suspended, he will still be in prison for 10 years and nine months. If police suspect that he does something wrong after he is initially released from prison, he could find himself serving the rest of that nearly 80-year sentence. What is particularly shocking, however, is that the young man pled guilty to the robbery.

Choosing to plead guilty to a crime is an extremely personal decision, but it is one that is best made with the guidance of a criminal defense attorney. Without consulting an attorney, a suspect could enter a plea without truly understanding what will happen, how long they may be incarcerated for and the post-prison consequences to pleading guilty. Lawyers can better help a suspect weigh their options before taking a step that could end with a 78-year prison sentence.

The prosecution said that 21-year-old had gone to an acquaintance's apartment earlier this year and knocked on his door. When the man noticed that the suspect was with someone else, he tried to shut them out, but the 21-year-old and his companion entered and robbed the acquaintance. They knocked him unconscious and left.
