The prevalence of drunk driving in America

The more drivers are advised not drink and drive, the more it seems that Americans break drunk driving laws. This is probably the reason why even sober drivers are now advised to be careful once they are behind the wheel, as drunk driving cases continue to increase in America. A new study has shown that about 4.2 million people in the U.S. have driven under the influence of alcohol at least once in the past month.

This data indicates that there are millions of drunk driving episodes per year. According to the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System survey, about 1.8 percent of the U.S. population was involved in an incident of drunk driving at least once in the one month prior to the survey. Silver springs residents may be surprised to hear that researchers concluded that about 121 million drunk driving episodes occurred over a one year period.

It has also been reported that drunk driving is common among young males between the ages of 21 to 31. Drunk drivers are also likely to be involved in risky behaviors such as binge-drinking and not wearing their seatbelt. Researchers come to the conclusion that all states should enforce primary seatbelt laws in order to prevent serious DUI accidents.

The study also indicated that men are mostly involved in four out of five felony drunk driving incidents. The researchers also concluded that if every state adopted a primary seatbelt law, fatal drunk driving accidents could be reduced substantially. It would also allow traffic police to ticket people for failing to wear seatbelts before getting behind the wheel.

For these reasons, law enforcement agencies across Maryland and the rest of the country are taking measures to curb drunk driving. Unfortunately, when authorities implement such measures, many innocent people may also be harassed. Those people should not let false allegations bring about all the consequences of a DUI. Should they need any help in their efforts, they may choose to consult with an attorney.
