Maryland traffic stop results in drug charges for two men

A 27-year-old driver and his 31-year-old passenger have been charged with possession as well as possession with intent to distribute cocaine along with giving a false statement. The passenger turned out to be a fugitive.

The drug charges stemmed from a Pokomoke area traffic incident in which a Maryland State Police trooper pulled over the vehicle the two men were riding in after noticing that the passenger of the vehicle was not wearing his seatbelt. According to police officials, the trooper allegedly smelled the aroma of marijuana emitting from the vehicle as well as some other criminal indicators. The trooper then called for backup along with help in identifying the passenger of the vehicle, who reportedly was not carrying any form of identification on him.

The man was later identified as a fugitive who was wanted on an extraditable warrant in Virginia for possession of cocaine with intent to distribute and also possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

During a subsequent search of the vehicle, 121 grams of powder cocaine were allegedly discovered in the engine compartment of the vehicle, reportedly stashed inside the air cleaner box of the engine. The two men were then arrested.. The driver of the vehicle was given a $50,000 bond. The passenger of the vehicle was issued a $75,000 bond for the local charges. He was additionally ordered to be held without bond on the fugitive warrant.

Drug offenses such as possession and possession with intent to distribute cocaine are serious drug charges that could result in a lengthy prison sentence. An experienced Maryland attorney would be strongly recommended. A criminal defense attorney can work to ensure that the defendant is treated fairly during the legal process.
