9 face drug charges; more arrests pending

Nine people in Maryland were taken into custody on Oct. 9 for possible drug dealing after authorities served search warrants on seven residences at the same time. Warrants were also issued for six individuals on Oct. 11 in an extensive raid for drug charges when local, state and federal law enforcement agencies cooperated in order to apprehend the individuals. The residences involved were located in Chesterton and Millington.

Undercover officers made 23 drug buys from 11 different people over a period of several months, which led to the warrants. The nine people who were apprehended initially on Oct. 9 were men ranging in age from 19 to 32 who were residents of Chestertown, Millerton and Worton. They faced a variety of charges, including possession of crack cocaine, sales of cocaine, possession of marijuana, sales of marijuana, possession of heroin and sales of heroin. Bail in each case ranged from $75,000 to $200,000, although two of the men were held without bail because of the alleged seriousness of their crimes. Some of the men were charged with sales in a school zone, which enhanced the penalties.

Another 32-year-old man was taken into custody on Oct. 11. He faces six counts of sales of counterfeit narcotics; his bail was set at $20,000. Authorities have warrants to arrest six more people, including a minor. They confiscated more than $1,500, 39.5 grams of a substance thought to be marijuana, 19.5 grams of a substance thought to be heroin, 10.1 grams of a substance thought to be cocaine and .2 grams of a substance thought to be Ecstasy. They also confiscated four vehicles.

When someone faces possible drug charges, they could receive serious penalties if they are convicted. A criminal defense attorney might be able to negotiate for reduced charges with prosecutors.
